A revolutionary step forward in sway control and weight distribution. From installation to the first 5 trips. First impression, It’s built like a piece of tank equipment and that’s a good thing.

I first chose a REESE weight distribution system in 1986 with my first travel trailer. At the dealers suggestion I also added the REESE Dual Cam Sway Control System. I kept that system as we changed vehicles and trailers. I did have a very brief foray into a friction control system when conflicts with the A-frame mounted equipment prevented me from mounting the dual cam in a stock configuration.

While I was visiting my local dealer I noticed the REESE Dual Cam HP Sway Control and the frame mount. I was first drawn by it’s massive appearance and apparent quality of the materials. I could replace this one piece of the hitch system and be able to enjoy the full benefits of the Dual Cam Sway Control that I regarded as an integral part of a safe trailering experience.

INSTALLATION

After reading the instructions I gathered the pieces of the hitch system and the recommended tools. A trip to the hardware store insured that I had the correct sized drill bit.

The directions are well written and with just a few modifications from the recommended techniques I was able to install and adjust the sway control in just over an hour. The standard dual cam control was always relatively easy to adjust IF there were no conflicts with A-frame mounted tanks, batteries, etc. The Dual Cam High-Performance was very easy to set to the initial adjustment, then it was off to the local school parking lot to finalize the settings and fully tighten the adjusting nuts.

ON THE ROAD

After 5 trips totaling almost 1,600 miles on roads ranging from smooth highways to narrow twisting local roads I’m even more impressed with the latest offering from REESE. Our travels took us over open water bridges with gusting sidewinds and tractor trailers passing at highway speeds. Sitting in the drivers seat I could just feel the initial effects of the wind pressures on the trailer before the Dual Cam H-P did it’s job and put the trailer right back on track.

The difference between the Dual Cam H-P and friction controllers is like night and day. The Dual Cam controls the sway by putting the trailer back where it belongs. My experiences with friction controllers was that while there wouldn’t be excessive sway there would be forces transferred to the tow vehicle that were uncomfortable in most wind or sway conditions. After the first leg of trip one I relaxed and enjoyed the ride just as I had with my original Dual Cam but even with a bit more comfort.

While the Dual Cam H-P proved it’s worth on the highway and great handling assistance on the back roads the next most critical test was arriving at the campground. Unlike the original Dual Cam the new High-Performance unit is QUIET. I wouldn’t have to worry about the squeaking and groaning that heralded our arrival as we turned every corner in the campground.

Maneuvering into the campsite was a breeze. No jumping out of the cab to disconnect the friction control. If you’ve ever forgotten to disconnect a friction control you’ll only do it once. Been there, done that, got the bent parts. The Dual Cam H-P was quiet in all aspects of backing and turning and did not interfere with getting set on just the right spot on the campsite. I had the opportunity to try this on a variety of different site configurations over the 5 trips and I was pleased with the results.

A sway control is designed to work with all the components of your rig and require the hitch to be set correctly for height and the trailer to be loaded properly to provide the correct amount of hitch weight. It’s only then that the sway control can begin to make your trailering experience safe and enjoyable. In my opinion REESE took the engineering of the Dual Cam system and improved it significantly with the Dual Cam H-P System.
